Salve for the Wounded

000_1129000_1125Well, as you all know by now, Proposition 8 passed.  After a few days of being so distraught that I could barely function, I’ve found a place for the realization that while a little over half of Californians are so terrified of me and who I am that they felt the need to strip me of my civil right, 48% of Californians are secure enough in themselves to vote to let me keep my rights!  That’s a 10 percent change in 8 years, which means the world is changing, my friends.  I have much, much more to say on the subject, and we have spent way too much time round the table in tears and anger to ever describe here, but tonight I am lifting my head up and dusting myself off and I am getting ready for the challenges ahead.

With the help of an amazing wedding gift that arrived yesterday.  If there was ever a time for chocolate, this is it.  Although let’s face it, I would be hard pressed to think of a bad time to eat chocolate.  These gorgeous, beautifully wrapped, creatively-flavored truffles – two boxes worth – seriously give Recchiuti Chocolates a run for their money.  (And god I love Recchiuti!  We gave their S’mores Bites as our wedding favors.) The owner of Grocer’s Daughter chocolate is a woman named Mimi Wheeler, the daughter of a grocer (surprise!), who grew up in rural Denmark.  The picture on the box is a photo of her mother.  In the first box of truffles, which I am afraid are not going to last long around here, we found Thyme, Honey, Rosemary, Basil, Pomegranate, Sea Salt Caramel, Almond, Spicy Mayan, Cardamom and more.  Each one more nuanced and delicate than the one before.  I can’t thank our friends in Michigan enough – unable to fly out for the wedding – for finding such a touching gift, and for exposing me to a Michigan artisan.

And so we soothe ourselves around our table.  As we try not to riot and rage.
